Funding
We are grateful for our second year of funding from The Burroughs Wellcome Fund for Education Enhancement.

Activities in Brief:
We will learn how to use bioinformatics tools to find patterns in DNA sequence, particularly using DNA as a bar code to identify individuals and group them in populations sharing characters of interest. We will also learn to design reagents that let you pull focus on a particular region of DNA to study, that can become a new bar code sequence, or can be used to study the function of that region in biology experiments. We are going to create reagents that will be used to pull out the American Chestnut chloroplast genome so that we can sequence it during the summer B3 camp.

Activity Summary:By the end of the 3 days students will be able to log into the DNA Subway site, select the bioinformatics pipeline that best suits the outcome they want, design reagents to create a new DNA bar code sequence, upload files into the pipeline and run it, and interpret the results.

Camp Objectives:

This camp provides hands-on experience running bioinformatics pipelines that take input DNA sequence and specify the types of filtering and analysis needed to produce useful reagents or draw correct conclusions about the relationship of the individual to others.

Post-course Note: The Instructors convey their gratitude to 4 UNC Charlotte Bioinformatics and Genomics Department graduate students who contributed time and effort to assist in making the course a success: Matthew Brown, Heena Desai, Laken Shumate and Dahlia Shvets (who contributed her own R coding lesson). We also thank the 12 students from Olympic High School, who spent an additional 6 hours in a classroom on Thursday and Friday evenings and 8 hours on a Saturday in May when they could have been sleeping in, for staying awake, staying alert, and making this an interesting experience for the instructors too. You were great guinea pigs, and your comments will help make this a much better course in it's next iteration.
