II.      Criteria/Tools for Review

B.      In your group, follow the sequence below:

What is important???

-          Authorship

-          Accuracy

How do you evaluate the authorship and accuracy?

1.       Scroll to the bottom

2.       Check the site host

3.       If you cannot find the author, then you should be suspicious

4.       Check out another source for facts

5.        If a Tilde is in the URL, then someone else is sponsoring the website

6.       You can find research at www.whois.net

a.       Check the owner to see their affiliation

7.       Or, go to Google and go to Find Web Pages that link to

1)      Website: Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.

Title of Article: “Bullying at Schools”

This website is a trustworthy website, because it has journal numbers, it is a “.org”, and it is sponsored by Eric Digest. The only issue with this particular website is that it is outdated, documented in 1997. This article also gives you journal references, authors, and book titles. This website is reliable however outdated.

2)      Website: www.stormfront.org

Title of Article: Message Board for “Storm Front”

This website appears to be very trustworthy, they have pictures of leaders such as David Duke, the website is copyrighted, and up to date (2008). They have a conference on November 7th through the 9th.  There is a post from an individual who claims to be educated, yet he has many misspellings. He stated that the Jews have stated all of the wars including Vietnam, and WWI. Writer appears to be making things up and reporting them as real.

3)      Website: www.stormfront.org

Title of Article: East Asians are not smarter

This website states that East Asians are inferior. The stereotypes of Asians being intellectually superior to others are because Jewish writers attempted to define an argument against white superiority and the concept of the Aryan Race. Also, white people are immune to cancer from cigarettes.

4)      Website: www.codoh.com/revision.html

Title of Article: Revisionism and Promotion of Peace

This website provides photographs and articles that provide falsified evidence for the denial of the Holocaust. Google advanced search was used to evaluate this website. Links were found that connected this website to other anti-Semitism web pages.  This reveals the “hate agenda” behind this website and its ulterior goal of falsifying the existence of the holocaust and other such hateful events.

5)      Website: http://pewforum.org/news/display.php?NewsID=15747

Title: Missionaries accused of “Hate Crimes” in Muslim Neighborhood

Authority was very clear, the name of the author was obvious as well as the organization that published it. The accuracy appeared valid, with direct quotes, and the objectivity was also valid with no direct biases.

Reflections:

-          Numerous websites with falsified or manipulated information with aim to deceive the readers.

-          We realize that we have to develop critical review when using the media especially the internet

-          Amazed by the requirement for membership for hate websites to be able to post or refute information, that way they have the ultimate control over what is posted as well as the ideas and theories of the website.

-          The structure and legitimacy of the hate websites are very thorough, distinct, and professional.
