Dr. Xiao is a Professor of Computer Science. She is also the Site Director of the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Robots and Sensors for the Human Well-being NSF I/UCRC ROSEHUB. She is the recipient of the 2015 Faculty Outstanding Research Award of the College of Computing and Informatics, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Xiao received her Ph.D. degree in Computer, Information, and Control Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, in 1990. From October to December 1997, she was a visiting researcher at the Scientific Research Laboratories of the Ford Motor Company, and from January to June 1998, she was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Robotics Lab of Computer Science Department, Stanford University. From August 1998 to December 2000, She was the Program Director of the Robotics and Human Augmentation Program at the National Science Foundation. From January 2008 to December 2012, she was the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, College of Computing and Informatics, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. From August 2006 to December 2012, she was also the Program Director of the Computing and Information Systems Ph.D. Program at UNC-Charlotte.

Dr. Xiao is an IEEE Fellow. She currently serves as the Vice President for Member Activities of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society for her second term. She is a recipient of the 2016 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Distinguished Service Award. She was an elected member of the Administrative Committee of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE RAS AdCom) for a term of three years (2010--2012). From 1999-2001, she was also an elected member of the IEEE RAS AdCom.

Dr. Xiao is a Program Co-Chair of the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation ICRA 2015 and is also on the Award Committee Chair for Best Manipulation Paper Award. She was also the Workshop and Tutorial Chair of ICRA 2014, a Senior Program Committe Member, and was also on the Award Committee. She was a Co-Chair of the Award Committee and a Co-Chair of the Travel Award Committee for ICRA2011 and a Co-Chair for Workshops and Tutorials for ICRA 2010. She has been involved in the Program Committees and Editorial Boards of ICRA for many years (1994--2015). Dr. Xiao was an Editor for the 2012--2014 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems IROS 2012, IROS 2013, and IROS 2014. She is the Workshop and Tutorial Chair of IROS 2015 and Senior Program Committee Member. She was also a Senior Program Committee Member of IROS 2014. She served as the Program Co-Chair (for America) of IROS 2004, the Chair for Workshops and Tutorials in IROS 2007, a Co-Chair for Workshops and Tutorials both in IROS 2009 and in IROS 2003, and a Co-Chair for Special and Organized Sessions of IROS 2006 , and a Co-Chair for Publicity for IROS 2010. Dr. Xiao is an Area Chair of the Conference Robotics: Science and Systems (RSS) in 2014 and was an Area Chair in RSS 2006 and RSS 2007. Dr. Xiao served as the Program Co-Chair of the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing ISAM 2007, the General Chair of the 2005 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Task Planning ISATP 2005, and the Program Co-Chair for ISATP 2001 and 2003.

She is on the Editorial Board of Advanced Robotics and was on the Editorial Boards of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and Intelligent Service Robotics. She was also on the Editorial Board of Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems. She is a Guest Editor of the Special Issue of Advanced Robotics on "Continuum Robots & Manipulation" for July 2015. She was a Guest Editor of the Special Issue of Advanced Robotics on "Compliant Motion: Modeling, Planning, and Control" for June 2005.
