Prerequisite: MATH 1242 or MATH 2164 with a grade of C or better or consent of the department.

Equivalence, Congruence, Divisibility (Chapter III)
Groups (Chapter IV, Sections 14-18)
Rings: Definition and Examples (Chapter VI, Section 24)
The Familiar Number Systems (Chapter VII)
Test Dates:
Test I Thursday February 15, 9:30-10:50 am
Test II Tuesday April 3, 9:30-10:50 am.
Final Exam Thursday May 3, 8:00-11:00 am

Homework: Homework will be handed in nearly every week, and will be usually due on Tuesday. I will make an effort to regularly post the homework on the webpage http://www.coe.uncc.edu/~ghetyei/courses/3163/hw.html .  In case of discrepancy, what I said in class is "official".
Evaluation: Grades will be based on: 25% for the homework, 21 % for each of the tests, and 33 % for the final.
Class meeting: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30-10:50 am in Denny 203.
