Eligibility

To be eligible for a senior project, you must fulfill the following prerequisites:

  1. Completion of at least two 3000-level ITCS/ITIS courses.
  2. Obtain approval from the sponsor of the project in which you are interested.
  3. If the project is external to the Department, obtain a sponsor within the SIS or Computer Science Departments in addition to the original sponsor.

List of Senior Projects

Information on approved Senior Projects is available at http://www.cs.uncc.edu/senior_projects/ You may propose your own Senior Project if none of those listed appeal to you. To propose your own Senior Project, provide me with a description (one page should be sufficient) of the project goals and deliverables.

Sponsorship

Unlike most courses, where anyone eligible may register, sponsorship of Senior Projects is voluntary. That is, faculty are not compelled to be sponsors. Thus, registering for my section of ITIS 3650 or ITIS 3651 requires my personal approval; no other faculty or administrative person in the College of IT can register you for my sections of these courses. I have personal requirements that you must fulfill before I will agree to sponsor you for your Senior Project. These are not course prerequisites per se.  They are simply minimal levels of academic accomplishment that you must achieve before I will sponsor your project. As a capstone course, successfully completing a Senior Project implies that you already possess a certain amount of knowledge. The project is not the proper place in which to acquire that knowledge - it is where you put it to use.

If you want me to sponsor your Senior Project my requirements are:

  • Pass ITIS 3300 (Software Requirements and Project Management) with a B or better.
  • If your Senior Project involves Web design, in addition to passing ITIS 3300, you must accomplish both of the following:
  1. Pass ITIS 2300 (Web-Based Application Development) with a B or better.
  2. Pass ITIS 3130 (Human-Computer Interaction) with a B or better.

If you anticipate asking me to sponsor your Senior Project please plan ahead and fulfill the requirements shown above before you ask me to sponsor your project. I am willing to talk with you at any time about a project you are planning, regardless of whether or not you have completed these requirements. However, I will not agree to be your sponsor until you have completed these requirements.

If I have already agreed to sponsor your Senior Project the requirements listed above are waived.

Expectations and Deliverables

A WORD document explaining my expectations and the deliverables I require for Senior Projects is available here Unless you are prepared to fulfill these expectations completely please do not ask that I sponsor your Senior Project.
