Protocols: Lab Methods -- Work in Progress
We will post descriptions of procedures, images that we think will help students recognize equipment and details that are easy to forget, and other aids, such as practice sets for carrying out calculations, tutorials and so on. This page will be updated frequently.

June 16 th

Comments
The skills included pipetting, mixing and centrifuging, using stocks with different viscosities and densities. Also collecting pellets and separating layers of liquids.

June 17 th

Comments
The skills included grinding up leaf tissue and extracting the carbohydrate and protein, then concentrating the nucleic acid by precipitation.

June 18 th

Comments
The skills include selective degradation of RNA and protein, extracting away the residue and collecting the DNA by precipitation.

June 19 th

Comments
The skills include spectrophotometry and gel electrophoresis of the DNA, and PCR amplification of a chloroplast segment.

June 23 rd

Comments
The skills include PCR amplification of multiple segments of the sample DNA using two types of primer.

June 24 th

  • Molecular Marker Analysis of the DNA (not yet posted)
Comments
The skills include carrying out gel electrophoresis on the markers we generated and analyzing the resulting data

June 25 th

  • Overflow Day - to repeat reactions or finish up analyses, as needed.
Comments

Prep Sheets - these show what type of preparation we do prior to each class, perhaps useful.
