Honor: He recently received the NCNB award for excellence in teaching at UNC Charlotte.

Occupation: Reiter is associate professor of mathematics. He also founded and advises the Charlotte Mathematics Club, a group for mathematically inclined junior high and high school students.

Background: He was born in Jackson, Tennessee., in 1942. After growing up in

Louisiana, Reiter received his bachelor`s degree in mathematics at Louisiana

State University in 1964. He received a master`s degree and doctorate from

Clemson University. He moved to Charlotte in 1972 after teaching at the University of Hawaii for three years.

Family: Reiter and his wife, Betty, a mathematics professor at Winthrop College, live in the Stonehaven neighborhood. Ashley, their 16-year-old daughter, is a student at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.

Favorite Aspect of Job: ``Watching students grow intellectually.``

Hardest Aspect of Job: ``Assigning grades.``

Hobbies: Reiter enjoys jogging, racquetball, tennis, bridge and traveling.

Last Book Read : ``Innumeracy`` by John Paulos.

Greatest Lesson Learned: ``In terms of dealing with students, you

must make it clear to them that you`re on the same side that they

are. . . . The teacher is also a learner.``
