UNC Charlotte professors Dennis Dorin

and Harold Reiter are this year`s

winners of NCNB Awards for

Excellence in Teaching.

Both received $1,000 awards during

ceremonies at UNCC on Friday night.

Recently, Dorin, a political science

professor and prelaw counselor, had

taken his students to Washington to

interview Supreme Court Justice Sandra

Day O`Connor.

This fall, he plans to visit Justice Antonin

Scalia.

Dorin says he tries to convince students

that he`s learning with them. ``I

never imply that I have all the theories

and then just dole them out.``

At UNCC since 1972, Dorin earned his

doctorate from the University of

Virginia.

Reiter, a math professor, says his

ambition is to ``develop in Charlotte a

group of young mathematicians who

would do well in national and

international competition.``

Reiter started a math contest at UNCC,

now in its 11th year, that brings

young people to campus to test their

skills. He also founded the Math Club in

Charlotte to encourage students to

improve their skills and compete.

Reiter believes in the team approach to

learning and encourages his

students to work together.

With a doctorate from Clemson

University, Reiter also came to UNCC

in 1972. A committee of past award

recipients selects teaching award

winners.

Students, faculty and alumni nominate

candidates.
