About the Contents of the Digital Collection

The original reel-to-reel audiotapes, most now with full transcripts, are housed in the Special Collections Unit of UNC-Charlotte's Atkins Library. The digital collection is comprised of selected clips representing each speaker and a transcript of each speaker's full interview. The clips include: a 60- to 90-second segment from the audiotape which displays the speaker presenting a full, if brief narrative, usually uninterrupted by the interviewer; a transcript of the narrative segment; and one or more graphics, usually photographs, illustrating the focus of the speaker's story. Each voice clip was selected to display discourse cues as well as phonological, lexical and syntactic items, and to suggest aspects of social and cultural history from the 1920s through the 1960s, aspects more fully illustrated by the transcript for each speaker. We thank for their assistance: Robin Brabham, Librarian of Special Collections; Randy Penninger, Manuscript Curator; and Madeleine Perez, University Archivist; Dr. K.R. Submaranian, Assistant Professor of Computer Science; Dr. Schley Lyons, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Edward Perzel, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences. The original interviewer and the transcriber are credited at the outset of each full transcript; all of the transcribers were, at the time of transcription (1995-1997), candidates for the M.A. in English at UNC-Charlotte. Their work made this collection available to all.
