1.) Book reviews in Configurations range from 1,000 to 1,500 words. While some essay reviews may be published, the bulk of the reviews will be of a more traditional length. The purpose of the reviews is, of course, to give the reader a clear sense of the book under review, but the reviews should also reflect the insights and expertise of the reviewer.
2.) The reviews in the journal will focus on one or two major books that have an interdisciplinary approach to literature, science, technology, film, and cultural studies. Although we will try to focus most of our attention on recent books, classics in the field, as well as reprints and noteworthy books, may also come under review.
3.) Reviewers should adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style with regard to issues of style.
4.) Both the text and the heading of the review should be double-spaced. Use underlining rather than italics and please avoid tightly spaced laser fonts.
5.) The heading should follow the following format:
Alfred N. Author. Title. City: Publisher, 1992. xiv + 329 pp., illus., glossary, bibl., indexes. $63.00, $9.50 paper.
(List titles separately if more than one book is being reviewed.)
6.) The reviewer's name and affiliation should appear at the end of the text.
7.) Documentation: Quotations from the book under review should be followed by the appropriate page number in parentheses: (p. 121). Quotations from other works should be followed by documentation in parentheses: (Michael Adas, Machines as the Measure of Man [Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1989], p. 123). If many works are referred to, or if for some other reason footnotes are absolutely necessary, type the notes in normal Configurations style, double-spaced, on a separate page following the text. Notes are discouraged, however, and reference lists will not be used.
A true bibliography, providing complete citations for each work mentioned, should be attached to the review itself, though it will not be published as part of the review.
8.) The copyright of the reviews will be held by The Johns Hopkins University Press. Authors should obtain permission for citation or duplication from the press.
9.) Some minor matters of style may be changed by the editors of the journal. If changes of any significance in terms of substance appear necessary, the author will be consulted.
10.) All manuscripts should be submitted both on diskette and as hard copy. Texts may be in Word, WordPerfect, MAC formats, or ASCII.
11.) In addition to the review itself, authors should provide the following on a separate page and on the disk:
-Mailing address
-Telephone number
-Fax number & hours (if available)
-E-Mail address (if available)
-A short (30 words) biographical sketch
