At its fastest, the previous GeomView solution to the problem could only graphically generate 5 to 6 time steps per minute for all 22 populations. The integrated Inventor solution is capable of generating approximately 500 time steps per minute for all 22 populations. The Inventor program offers an approximate 100 fold increase over the old GeomView solution. By calculating the entire simulation at once and storing the results in data structures, and the fast drawing capabilities of Open Inventor, this solution is far superior to the GeomView solution. Preliminary experiments suggest that the number of populations represented in the Inventor scene graph can be dramatically increased before any appreciable slow down is encountered.
