SPED 5275

Teaching Reading to Learners with Special Needs

Course Overview

Special Education 5275 is an online class that provides students with effective teaching strategies and materials to teach reading to learners with special needs. A tutorial field experience is a required component. The field-based clinical experience includes the assessment of a student/s and correct implementation of Direct Instruction lessons. Course objectives also include the development of well-constructed lesson plans, an evaluation of a commercial reading program, a demonstration of correct pronunciation of letter-sound correspondences, and identification of best practices in teaching reading supported by scientifically-based research.  Most of the classes will occur online at a set time in a face-to-face setting, and the course requires that students have a web cam installed on their computers.
