Consultation and Collaboration

Course Overview

The course is designed to provide students with the background, knowledge base, experience, and personal contact to work collaboratively with professionals and parents.  Learning consultation and collaboration skills assures that the needs of individuals with Exceptional Learning Need are addressed throughout their school career. It also enhances the view of Special Educators as specialists and a resource to colleagues for instruction, inclusion, transition, and collaboration with outside agencies. Students enrolled in the course will use these skills, the professional literature, and their professional experience to formulate communication packages for successful collaboration.  Students will be expected to devise communication tools, such as a letterhead, logo, newsletter and daily and weekly devices to keep teachers and parents abreast.  Also, a resource file listing referrals for teachers and parents are required.   Additionally, a family plan that includes collaborative problem solving is a major part of the course.

This class will be delivered through Centra with Blackboard support. Weekly Centra sessions will be delivered for content learning, discussion, and presentations. Blackboard is used to display course materials, examples and resources. Technology requirements include (a) reliable internet access; (b) headset and speaker; and (c) skills in email communications, downloading and attaching documents, saving and renaming documents, scanning documents, basic Word and Excel processing, and PowerPoint Presentation.
