SPED 5272
Teaching Mathematics to
Learners with
Special Needs
Course Overview
SPED
5272 is designed to review, discuss, implement, and modify assessment and
instructional techniques to meet the needs of students with mild disabilities,
such as LD, ADHD, mild mental retardation, and mild behavior disorders.
Participants enrolled in the class will be familiar with mathematics content and
curriculum sequence (e.g., evidenced by the North Carolina Standard Course of
Studies (NCSCOS). The course will endeavor to provide participants with ideas
and insight that will enable them to analyze individual student’s mathematical
abilities, including assessment of error patterns and an understanding of the
effects of language-based disabilities on understanding math concepts.
Participants will also learn, create, modify, and develop instructional
techniques appropriate to teaching mathematics to students with mild
disabilities. These techniques will emphasize empirically based activities that
are systematic, explicit, and multi-sensory methods to teach mathematics.
Finally, participants will develop lesson plans that reflect these assessment
and instructional elements.
This
course will be taught online with synchronous class sessions using Centra. SPED
5100, 5173, 5175, and 5270 must be completed prior to enrolling in SPED 5272. |
